چکیده

For an incomplete-information model of public-good provision with interim participation constraints, we show that e¢ cient outcomes can be approximated, with approximately full surplus extraction, when there are many agents and each agent is informationally small. The result holds even if agents’ payo¤s cannot be unambiguously inferred from their beliefs, i.e., even if the so-called BDP property (“Beliefs Determine Preferences”) of Neeman (2004) does not hold. The contrary result of Neeman (2004) rests on an implicit uniformity requirement that is incompatible with the notion that agents are informationally small because there are many other agents who have information about them. Information Sharing in Banking: A Collusive Device?

We show that information sharing among banks may serve as a collusive device. An informational sharing agreement is an a-priori commitment to reduce informational asymmetry between banks in future lending. Hence, information sharing agreements tend to increase the intensity of competition in future periods and, thus, reduce the value of informational rents in current competition. We contribute ...

Corrigendum to “ Correlated information , mechanism design and informational rents ”

We amend an error in [S. Parreiras, Correlated information, mechanism design and informational rents, J. of Econ. Theory 123 (2005) 210–217]. Consequently, it is in general not possible to reinterpret a mechanism design model that violates the spanning condition of Crémer and McLean [Econometrica 56 (1988) 1247–1258] as one in which agents hold private information about the informativeness of t...

Competing Through Information Provision∗

This paper studies the symmetric equilibria of a two-buyer, two-seller model of directed search in which sellers commit to information provision. More informed buyers have better differentiated private valuations and extract higher rents from trade. I establish how the characteristics of exogenously fixed sale mechanisms determine equilibrium information provision and show that competition gene...

Informational Rents and Discretionary Industrial Assistance

The paper analyses the existence and efficiency of discretionary industrial assistance schemes under asymmetric information between an uninformed government and a uniform distribution of firms with differing productivities. Discretionary assistance allows the government to scrutinise projects in an effort to learn the type, which can reduce the ‘informational rents’ of automatic assistance, whe...

Relationship Banking, Loan Specialization and Competition

While competition constrains the ability of banks to extract informational rents from lending relationships, their informational monopoly also curtails competition through the threat of adverse selection. To analyze an intermediary’s optimal strategic response to these opposing effects we specify a model where the severity of asymmetric information between banks and borrowers increases with inf...
